I had this exact fault with my pre-HE XJ12. It turned out one of the reed switches inside the distributor was defective. The car would start oke, then die after a few seconds. The ECU needed the signal from the both switches, if not it would shut down the fuelpump. While cranking, the fuelpump got powered anyway, so the car would start and then stop.
