Hi Bill, Well, this is kind of a long shot, but here goes. Put the motor at top dead center. Remove the oil filler cap, and peer at the #6 cam lobe. Is it pointed up and out... or down and in. If it's pointed up and out, then you're at the beginning of the work stroke on #6, and should be firing that cylinder. Trace the plug wire to the distributor, and figure out where it's located. Open the distributor, and make sure the rotor is pointing at about the right wire (not 180 degrees off). If the cam lobe is pointed down and in, then you've just finished the exhaust stroke, are about to start the intake on #6, and should be firing #1. Trace #1 and make sure the rotor is pointing at it. It is very easy to get this 180 degrees off when removing and re-installing the head. I don't worry about it, and if I screw it up, just flip-flop all the wires on the distributor cap 3 places. If you screw it up, everythign will look just fine (including your timing, when looking at it with a timing light) but the car won't start. However, it shouldn't really fire up either (and then die) so this seems like kind of a long shot in your case from what you describe. Good luck- Ryan.
