Had the same problem myself a while back with my 77 XJS, Oil dripping on
the exhaust from above the oil filter. I ended up removing the block theoil
filter screws to and replacing the gasket and O rings. The actual problem
though was the little oil line leading to this block, it had gone hard and
cracked thus causing the leak.
If doing anything in this area make sure you replace this piece of pipe.
With regard to your ball joint setup, the only way to determine the correct
position of those shims is with a good wheel alignment done by someone who
knows what they are doing, any other way is downright dangerous. If the
shims are still uneven look for a possible bend in the chassis or other
structural problem. They will never be exactly equal though.
