[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index] To Phillip on the MSD and Opus system
Hey Phillip Oh the Opus system now this is a different trigger system to have on a car. The folks here at MSD are good but truely do not know the british stuff very well. Since I seem to continue to play with these cars they usually send me the phone calls even though I do production instead of customer service. But alas your question in the opus is one I have seen before. Unless you do some other work the opus system must stay in the car. The good news is the electrical current load drops to 300 milli amps on the OPUS when the MSD is connected so the system will live a long time. The paper work I have shows the opus on 77 to 80 Jaguars so your 73 could be a bit different but we can make it work. The opus will have to stay in place because the trigger uses (ferrite rods) that will not trigger the MSD directly or any other aftermarket ignition for that matter. I tried some years ago to come up with a replacement trigger device but the later requirement for the fuel injection prevented a replacement. Maybe if enough people wanted a replacement distributor I could get support at the shop to do one...we do VW stuff eickkkk....anyway.... As long as your stock system works what you need to do is connect in front of the coil. My papers show a White and Green wire on coil plus (+) and a White and Black wire on coil minus (-). If you are hooking up a MSD 6 series box follow the instructions in the box and connect as follows: MSD Orange to Coil (+) on coil Black to Coil (-) on coil Stock Disconnected from coil Wht-Grn to Small Red wire on MSD Wht-Blk to White wire on MSD box The rest of the hook up is as per instructions, battery, ground, etc... Now let me ask you how fast do you drive the car? I ask this because the standard box is set for 8 cyl operation. What this means is the max RPM the box will take you to on a 12 cyl is about 9500 RPM and then is shuts down. For most people this is not a problem but for those real speed freaks that is not high enough. If that is your problem then I need to build a special MSD7 for 12 cyl operation. We have done this many times before for Jags, Allison, and other motors. Also remember that if you connect a rev limiter to the box unless it is calibrated for 12 cyl the module value will be off (by 1/3) ie..10,000 rpm 8 cyl equals 6666 rpm 12 cyl. So to get the correct rpm chip value do the following: (RPM/10)x15=plug value I'll fax a wire diagram to you as requested. If the colors do not match mail me back at jstrom@msdignition and we can work this out. Jeff 62 MK2 58 MK1 (needs a home) 74 midget + Follow-Ups:
