Not at all. there are no stupid questions, just stupid answers.  I hope I
didnt startle you.  My answer may have been a little stupid.

But... I think those mechanics gave you stupid answers.  Especialy the one
that wanted to replace the engine if the rings were bad.  The engine is
worth about $3000 if its a Jag engine and the cost of rings is far below
that unless its a chevy mechanic that doesnt know what he is doing, then the
cost can be astronomical.

I would sugest you take the car to a certified Jaguar mechanic, maybe not
the dealer though if you are short on funds.  Most mechanics dont know beans
about Jaguars.  The Jag is a whole new breed.

When I mentioned "Lump", that is what we call a Jaguar that has been
neutered by putting a cheny engine in it,

If you have a 6 cyl engine its most likely Jaguar, if you have a V8, its
definately NOT Jaguar, ita a Lump.
