I've done something similar to my potentiometer, but I just cut the contact
off and resoldered it 1 mm of the visible track. (The soldering was a little
tricky, since the contact are pretty small). 

I still have all flesh and bones and a few hundred additional $ :-). Seriously 
thanks for the warning Steve, but the throttlee potentiometer should not
cause any harm.
