I used to drive a 1967 Rover 2000 (P6 for the initiated). Cylinder head layout is quite similar to the jag V12: single OHC, vertical valves under shimmed inverted buckets. I just remembered that exhaust valves were able to rotate through the use of a simple device. The collar consists of two conical concentric parts which are free to rotate. The upper/inside part grips the valve stem through the cotters while the lower/outside part retains the spring. GM Bedford Diesel engines use a so-called "rotator cap" which rests on the stem on top of the cotters. If I understand its working correctly, it is meant to push the cotters down slightly and relieve their grip on the stem. Michel Carpentier
