Not so on my car (pre-HE), the low coolant indicator frequently came on
while driving when I had a perforated header tank.  I recall that it cam on
when the system needed about a litre or so to top it up.  There is an
electronic module which conditions the signal from the sensor.  I think it
brings the light on if the sensor is not dunked in water about half the
time.  I wonder if your sensor is gummed up with Barrs Leaks, so that it
only reads low when it really is dry?
