[xj-s] '88XJ-S RePaint Questions

My '88XJ-S, which is grey, is starting to look a little shabby. I guess it's
starting to oxidize on the hood, the top, and on the center of the trunk. It
looks white, and kind of like flour. I've been told that the clear-coat is
burning off, and that the greys were very prone to this.

So, I went out and got some prices... Stuart's Paint & Body, which is by
far one of the finest in Dallas/Ft.Worth, quoted around $4,800.00, and that
was for the door dings, everything. They said they'd have it about a
month, and would take each piece apart and individually paint it. I've seen
their work, and it's excellent.

Another place (much less superb), quoted me about $1,800.00 to 2
Thousand. He said he'd pull all doordings, etc, and that the job could be
done "over the weekend". When I inquired about the length of time that it
would take to dry, he indicated that the new type of finish coats that
they're using now dry VERY quickly, and it would be ready to drive
literally in a day or so. He did say that the paint type he's using is
guaranteed for 10-15 years. When I mentioned that I was thinking of
maybe changing the colour, he said that the cost would go up, because
they'd have to paint the door jambs, etc, then. It also seemed that he's not
going to remove the old paint, although he is going to sand it down... etc,
etc...

My question is: I want a GOOD, reasonable paint job. I'm kind of leary of
the cheaper guy,... rightfully so? Sounds to me like he's going to give it the
"once over", whereas Stuart's is going to take their time. Obviously,
Stuart's is a good quality job. Should this be a total re-paint, or can it be a
buff, or partial?

Can someone post some explanations or facts concerning this job for the
XJ-S? Thank you!

Rory,
'88XJ-S in the hot Texas Heat (Dallas).
