I had been driving Volvo station wagons and minivans since my first child was born in 1984 and last year, I told my husband that I needed a mental health car. One that didn't have "MOM" written all over it and it had to be a five speed. We looked at Z-3's and Miatas but as a practical matter, I knew the kids would have to ride occasionally so we started looking at Firebirds and Cobras. My husband has driven Jaguars for many years and that's what he wanted me to get but...no five speeds. Just as we were ready to put a deposit down on the Firebird, his dealer got in a '94 XJS convertible WITH A FIVE SPEED. 22,000 miles, hunter green, tan top and interior. I've had this car since February and love it as I have never loved a car before. It is every bit the mental health vehicle and then some that I needed and I don't plan to ever give it up. The only problem is my husband wants to drive it as much as I do. The car is a 6...not a V12 but that was a tradeoff I was willing to make. According to the XJS "pre-owned" car brochure the dealer gave us, 1994 was the only year that Jaguar brought five speeds into the country. I can't see from the brochure whether they were only on the 6 cylinders but I don't see why they would do that. There have to be more of them out there.
