[xj-s] RE:Overheating The right solution

Julian Mullaney wrote in part:

you can reasonably assume it is maintaining constant temperature. If it goes
up and down a bit, even if it stays below the N then your engine is NOT
keeping a constant temp. This means only one thing: the stats are wide open,
the cooling system is at max. capacity, and the temp. not controlled at all.

I am not sure I agree in total with part of this statement. I have a temp
guage on the lower return hose. My stock needle will remain rock solid on the
lower part of N from 190F to about 240F then it will move up from there. I
think (at least it seams in my case) that the stock guage setup is not linear
to actual temp but shows if you are running below normal range, within normal
range, or above normal range.

This is with 180F stats. With the a/c running in stop & go traffic on Monday
in 100F (going through a construction zone) my temp guage went from 190F up to
225F. Once I finally got out of the construction zone & was moving again,
then temp droped back down to near 190F (40mph zone) after a few miniutes.
The stock guage never moved from the lower part of the N or now tiny up &
down that I noticed.

Just my own little experience.
