Depression and irritation are setting in since I received the August R&T. For years I have lived with the vain hope that Jaguar would someday build a modern replacement for the E-Type. A car with an emphasis on handling and performance, while retaining the classic Jaguar style and panache. I love the look of my XJ-S, but have always regreted what I perceived to be sacrifice of handling on the altar of a soft boulivard ride. In addition, the inability to get a manual transmission with the V-12 was a major pain. I've always felt that the GM slushbox ruined the XJ-S to a large degree. I had hopes for the XK8, but again we are offered less than 300HP, a soft ride and a slushbox. The XKR8 may help in the horsepower and ride department, but still no manual transmission. Then comes the R&T. For a couple of weeks I've pondered the '00 E-Type clone on page 45. Yep, a sure enough modern E-Type with a 408HP V-8. Too bad it's a BMW, not a Jag. But at least we know BMW will offer a manual. They sell every 540i 6-speed they can buuild, and 3- and 5-series as well as M3s and Z3s with manuals arre plentiful. The real irritation set in when I was glancing at the same issue last night while picking up my XJ-S at the local Jag shop. There is was, right opposite the table of contents, a full page ad featuring three pedals all in a row. And the caption? "Lincoln LS. Jump in with both feet." That's right, a #@$%! Lincoln with a Getrag 5-speed. Can you believe that Ford will build rear drive Lincolns with manuals trannies on the Jag platform, but won't build a Jag with a manual? Whoa! Which brand is supposed to have the sporting image here? -- ----------------------------------------------------------- Mike Cogswell mcogswel@mnsinc.com '74 E-Type OTS '88 XJ-S Convertible (Hess&Eisenhardt) ----------------------------------------------------------- Follow-Ups:
