Peter Smith posted a very interesting document about torque, lubrication, bolt stretch, etc. I have to admit, I found it confusing. I understand about friction affecting the torque reading, but a bolt is a threaded fastener. One turn of a bolt, should move the joined items closer together by the thread pitch, minus the stretch. Thus, it seems to me that torquing to a spec that is intended for less lubrication will rersult in over torquing. If applying "X" amount of torque to a bolt with oil on the threads produces 5.5 tonnes, and adding oil to the bolt head produces 6.0 tonnes at the "same" torque, and adding a washer produces yet another tonnage, it sounds like you have the equivalent of four different readings with the same lubrication / washer configuration. How on earth do you know which is the correct procedure?
