Crap, since it looks like mine is due for work too (last week, I suddenly don't get sufficient current to charge - but it IS outputting 13.7 V). I plan to see if exciting the field (applying voltage to the output of the built-in regulator - hopefully accessible while still mounted in the vehicle) won't raise the output current. The alternator idiot light doesn't glow (and after the belt went a couple of weeks ago, I KNOW it does light up), so I'm reasonably sure that the alternator is outputting something. >The unit is now at the repair shop being rebuilt which I hope will be >cheaper than a new one. Uhm, given the work involved with removing and installing the unit, I'd carefully weigh the cost of getting the bearings replaced against that. If it adds < US$10 to the cost, I'd do it, just so that I knew I was installing a nearly-new unit. >connected there so I asked about it and was told, "Its an *IGNITOR* >connection as some regulators need it." This seems like a strange answer >since the regulator in internal (isnt it?). If its internal then they IGNITOR? We burning things in there? It is probably an external connector for the field exciter, which is essentially the output of the regulator to the alternator. Most likely used to monitor if the regulator is regulating properly - *AND/OR* to permit an external application of a signal to activate the field, thus causing the alternator to output current. That'd be my guess. I haven't examined my alternator yet (still installed), but I'd bet this is the contact I'm looking for to run my test. --- <http://jaguar.professional.org/> Sean Straw '88 Jaguar XJSC 5.3L V12 Marin County, California '69 Buick GranSport 455 V8 References:
