I was in the same fix myself a few years ago, I ended up by removing/replacing the valves in a 6 cyl. 3.4 head with a standard large "C" clamp and a short piece of alum. tubing. I cut the tube about 2 or 3 in. long, suared each end, beveled the ID on one end to match the retainer and cut about a quarter of the circ. away for the full length. The tube went between the retainer and the solid jaw of the clamp. The screw part had a svivel head which fit the valves perfectly. After srewing down the clamp the keepers could be easilly remved thru' the cut away side in the tube with a small screwdriver. Taking them out was a piece of cake, getting 'em in again a bit more difficult, could have used a third hand to hold all the bits together while screwing the clamp up. If I could have found a way to fix the tube to the clamp, I think it would have been a little easier. The mallet and socket method did not work for me all the time, the keepers tend to stick and jamb when the valve kicks back. I did always hit them directly on the stems after assembly to make sure they are fully seated before adjusting clearance. Richard Griffiths 86 XJ-SC
