Just received the below message from Mainstream Engineering, the folks who will EPA certify you over the Internet so you can buy R-12. Though it might be of interest to any who have converted to R134A. "As a refrigeration technician, certified by Mainstream, I thought you might be interested in one of our latest products for automotive air conditioning applications. Mainstream has developed a remedy for the common complaint about reduced cooling capacity of new and retrofitted automotive A/C systems! This unique patent-pending low cost refrigerant additive, QwikBoost, increases the cooling capacity of automotive air conditioners, and increased cooling capacity means that the car cools faster. Because of QwikBoost's energy and environmental benefits, Mainstream received the prestigious Tibbetts Award at the White House on October 16, 1997. QwikBoost will not provide a performance boost on systems that still use R-12, but it is ideal for new cars and for older cars that have been retrofitted to R-134a. (If your car was manufactured after 1995, the refrigerant is R-134a and QwikBoost will work. If manufactured before 1995 check the compressor or engine compartment to determine the refrigerant type used.) QwikBoost is available in a pressurized 3-ounce R-134a refrigerant can that includes the EPA-required 16 ACME right-threaded cap. QwikBoost is added to the automotive A/C system with the same hose and fittings used to add R-134a (instructions are on the can). EPA 609 Motor Vehicle A/C (MVAC) Certification is not required to buy or use QwikBoost. You can purchase on-line for $24.95 plus applicable sales tax. If you need a reusable charging hose, visit your local auto parts store or include one with your QwikBoost purchase for an additional $14.99. For more information visit Mainstream on-line at http://www.qwik.com/q_qwikboost.html" I have to connection with these people, except I got my EPA certification through them. Michael '84 XJ-S
