I filled my A/C with this stuff called "Autofrost", made by Monroe Air Tech Inc. in Bloomington, Indiana. It says that it's a replacement for R-12 and R-500, and warns that it should not be used in a system that has had R-134A "unless you can remove all the oil and replace with regular mineral oil of alkyl benzene". It also says that it should be charged to 80% (by weight) of the normal charge of R-12. I suspect that this is a similar substance to "hot-shot" which has been discussed on the list several times before, but I'm wondering if anyone knows what it actually is, i.e. does it have a number like R-something. It says that it contains Chlorodiflouromethane and Chlorodiflouroethane. The guy that did this for me thinks that my compressor might be weak, because when the gauge for the high side is very jumpy at times, (rapidly fluttering across a 20 or 30 pound range) and the sight glass still shows froth even though we increased the pressure today from about 175 to about 225. I thought that would make it blow colder, but it doesn't feel like it made a difference. It's working, don't get me wrong, but it's not the kind of cold I'd like it to be; my girlfriend's Toyota Camry is so cold it actually hurts to hold your hand next to the vent for a minute or two. What temperature should the air be coming out of the vents?Do I need to dangle a thermometer down into the vent to get an accurate reading? jb Follow-Ups:
