Further report on that XJ-S that was repaired by NE Classics by replacing the distributor. The distributor arrived today, and was accompanied by a note to please send it back after I'm through with it. Oh, darn, I guess I won't get to keep a spare set of springs after all. I might nevertheless yank them out and see how well I can measure them. I also hope to take the pickup out and test it in the oven, but with my own V12 in the midst of repairs it might take a while to get around to it. First thing noted: The centrifugal advance is seized! Not just a little, but totally immovable. No felt, and a nice layer of rust is visible looking down the hole. I am sure that Lawson assured me by phone that this had already been attended to. When I return this thing, I'll have to include a note with some ribbing on this account. This car was supposedly in one shop or another for two years, surely sooner or later ONE of them should have noticed this problem! Lawson had also expressed concern about the condition of the rotor, which was supposedly installed new and removed after only minutes of running. He included it in the package so I could see for myself. What was originally brass (I presume -- it's brass on MY car) on the rotor is discolored; it looks more like copper than brass now, and has a dull finish. The tip doesn't look worn, though, no pitting or erosion. The overall effect impresses me as though the rotor had been exposed to some sort of caustic fumes that attacked the brass without significant effect on the dielectric, but I don't know what could have caused that.
