Re: [xj-s] AC: R134 into R12...consequences

Apparently also if the compressor is not in PERFECT condition it needs
to be replaced as it would not be up to snuff because the system runs under
higher pressure.(From what I've heard)

Greetings all,

My understanding of the conversion (after talking to a boatload of people)
process for R12 to R134a is as follows:

(1) R134a is a smaller molecule than R12 so the cooling system (depending on
how it was designed) may have less cooling capacity. According to the
experience of those local technicians I have talked to, this difference may
be more apparent when idling than at any signficant forward speed.

(2) The mineral oil used to lubricate R12 systems is incompatible with
early versions of R-134a oil (PAG I think it's called). The ester oil used
for R134a is compatible with mineral oil.

(3) There is no incompatibility between the refrigerant types and the
O-rings in question, but rather between the early R134a lubricants(PAG)
and O-rings used in R12 systems. The new ester oils are compatible with
the O-rings from R12 systems.

There is a plethora of opinions out there, this is a compiliation of,
hopefully, the complete story.

Jonathan
