What I've heard from locals with experience in this area and the comments of those on the list with engineering expertise, it's down to math - 2 thou interference will fall out, 6 thou will never, short of nuclear temps. I don't think I'm afflicted with the problem (steam runs at lower temps) but I would insist on a 6 thou interference for any replacements.
