[xj-s] 16" Electric Fan Installation

I have the GM OEM 16" electric fan in hand, and have been staring at
the Jag fan shroud (the right 2/3, with the 18" opening for the 17"
belt-driven fan) trying to figure a convenient and attractive way to
fit the 16" fan into that 18" hole. Nothing seemed to be coming to
mind.

So now that I've got things apart and the shroud laying on the floor,
the solution becomes obvious! I took the shroud down to the local
sheet metal shop and they fabbed me a replacement shroud in about a
minute and a half and charged me $20. It's simply a flat pan with
three sides folded down. Hence, I can now cut a hole in the middle
any shape and size I want, and can locate the 16" fan over to the
right as far as possible to maximize clearance between the fan motor
and the water pump. I'll have to fashion little mounting tabs, but
that's no big deal.

As long as we were at it, I had them make this part of slightly
heavier gauge metal than the original. Since the new shroud won't
have the flange around the opening, it won't be quite as stiff; and
it will be expected to support the weight of a fan, so a little more
meat seemed prudent.

Part of what made this solution so obvious is the fact that the
original shroud is a real POS. It looks like it's been mangled a
coupla times; there's nothing straight and true on it.

Anybody have any good ideas about what to use to replace the foam
around the edges of the shroud where it contacts the radiator?
