[ nick@sn.no (Nick Johannessen) ] | | [ nick@sn.no (Nick Johannessen) ] | | | | [ nick@sn.no (Nick Johannessen) ] | | | | | | Continuation of thread previously titled "Cold start problems"... | | | | Ok, there seems to general agreement that the starter has | | to come out, and I've received enough clues to give me a | | pretty fair idea of how to go about it. | | With a few hints on how to get the starter out, and another | trip to the tool-shop, I finally got the blasted things out. | This job is probably a lot easier on a LHD vehicle. With the | stearing stuff filling the already very limited space it was | a bit tricky. | | Still, got the starter out and took it to a local Lucas shop | for testing and possibly rebuild. The diagnosed that it was | completely kaput, pulling 4-500 amps on idle... Finally time for another installment in this enthralling saga... Got the replacement starter the other day, a rebuilt one. Today the weather was ok and temperature above freezing so I braced myself and got cracking. The starter was easier to put that take out, possibly because I was working with the aid of daylight today. Connected up the thick cable that is held in place by a nut and the one marked "ign" that is held in place by a screw. Managed to get the starter roughly in line, but no way was I going to get that top bolt in place without help. Called a couple of friends and sat around waiting for a few hours for help to arrive. Finally, with the aid of extra hands and some choice swearing it is bolted up and ready to try. Connect up the battery and stop to think... Perhaps I should just leave it for a few days beforing trying it. Wait for a nice day when I'm on top of the world and wouldn't mind too much? No, put in the key and turn it. *click* Whats this? *click* And that the end of this installment. The battery seems well charged, no obvious loose bits (apart from the one that holds a pipe in place that is supposed to be screwed onto the starter). But no way do I get more than a *click* which sounds like it is coming from the starter area. So what is wrong? A duff starter? A stooopid mechanic? I await judgement.
