[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index] In-situ removal of manual transmission rear extension?
My speedometer has packed it in yet again. I have checked everything from the right-angle drive at the transmission to the speedo head, and all that works correctly (the speedometer will register if I use an electric drill to drive the right-angle drive). So my problem is the output from the transmission. I have removed the small driven gear from the rear of the transmission. It doesn't look pretty. Which means the driver gear, inside the transmission extension, is most likely worn as well. To see that gear (and to replace it) is to remove the transmission extension from the main transmission case. The vehicle is a 1973 series 3 E-type, manual transmission. I think that I can remove the exhaust system, lower the transmission mount, disconnect the drive shaft, and then have enough room to disconnect the transmission extension from the main case. The gear shift and consol may have to be removed to provide proper clearance. Has anyone done this? My alternative is to remove the engine and transmission (at the very least, I may have to undo the engine mounts and move the engine far enough forward so that the transmission drops). The next problem will be finding the replacement gears. If you have spares, look for me on the used parts exchange. Phillip Toogood Nashville Follow-Ups:
