Missing Oil Cooler

I recently had a loose tappet guide replaced and a stakedown kit installed on my 85 XJ6. (I was very lucky with this. The car had been making the tapping, or more like a brushing, sound for probably 1000 miles, since soon after I purchased it with 78,000 miles. My (former) Jag independent mechanic told me not to worry about the noise. But I did. Note to XJ6 owners: It threw me because it never appeared at idle, where most of the postings note it to be; only at light throttle climbing our San Francisco hills. Fortunately there is a choice of Jag specialists here and there was no damage to the engine.)

Anyway, when this mechanic installed the stakedown kit, he noticed what none of the Jag mechanics had before; not the one in LA who performed a "bug check" nor the aforementioned local. The PO evidently removed and bypassed the oil cooler. My new mechanic said that it was a very neat job and even expressed admiration. He also said that pre-82(?) XJ6s lacked the cooler, the hoses leak frequently, and although Jaguar must have had a good reason to add it he didn't recommend reinstalling one. Does anybody have any thoughts on this?

Although I am hardly a mechanic I have also fixed the cruise control, using tips garnered here...thanks to all. My cause was the switch at the brake pedal. I think I got a good deal on the car partly because the cruise wasn't working. It was a $2 fix. The same mechanic who told me not to worry about the ticking noise quoted me $300 to replace the actuator. I'm sure he is a perfectly good mechanic who knows Jags well, but I am not inclined to support his business. If anybody in San Francisco wants to know, let me know and I will E-mail you the name of the shop.

The only other problems with this terrific car are that the seat belt buzzer goes off with the interior lights, the oil pressure gauge usually reads high (60-70 psi at 2500 rpm) and the sunroof doesn't quite close. Any suggestions? The sunroof gap causes more wind noise than you'd want out of a Jag, but I'm more concerned about water intrusion and possible deterioration. Should I be?

Sorry this is such a long posting...I've been meaning to do it for months, but only got around to it with the tappet guide incident. Also incidentally, those whose E-mail programs allow them to select NOT to include the original message with their posting should do so. It'll make all our lives easier. (Let's see if mine works before I get too high-and-mighty...) Thanks to everybody who has contributed to the stakedown discussion.
