85 XJ-S: what's this hose for?

Hi to all,

I ran into problems sending this question out earlier this week and I am not
sure it ever got out right; so , I am sending it out again and apologize if
you've gotten it already. I can use the help.

This past Sunday I noticed that a small hose at the back of the engine was
cracked and was allowing air to be sucked in....somewhere. I need some
help/education as to what this hose does and any special tips in as far as
repairs.

The hose is about 1/4 to 1/3 inch-ID. Mounted on the back, and at the top of
the passanger side air intake manifold. It has a small white plastic valve
in-line, and from there hooks into a steel tube that T's off; one leg of the
tube goes across the bulkhead and onto the driver's side (somewhere), the
other leg of the tube runs along the passanger wheel arch. No similar set-up
(that I could find) on the driver's side.

I've "repaired" the hose (thoroughly cracked and leaking) with duct tape for
the time being while I asess what the final fix ought to be. The car seems
to run just fine and in fact seems to have gotten smoother and more
responsive to the accelerator since I taped the hose.

Not being a mechanical wiz like many of you I don't know what this little
do-dad does. My shop manual is of no help and the diagrams show no such
beast present on the manifold. My last resort source, the SICP catalog,
doesn't show anything that l;ooks like it either!

Could any of you enlighten me as to what this hose and valve do? Also any
tips on replacement such as what type of hose and whether the valve is a
common part or do I have to get a jag original? Thanks in advance, and best
regards to all
