Phone company charge myth

     Dan,

I'm flabbergasted that you fell for this one...

There is some truth to this...

The telephone companies have asked for something similiar (permission
to charge ISPs higher rates because of constant local area usage),
     but...

The FCC has told them they will take a look at it whenever they get
around to it. (also, word is the FCC is not buying it)

In other words, this letter is bullshit. In fact, it is pretty much a
given that any email you get on the Internet (unless you can verify
the ORIGINATOR of the material) that tells you to send a message is
     bogus.

By the way, there is a pretty entertaining web site out there devoted
to debunking various myths like this one (check out
     http://www.urbanlegends.com). Don't worry it's not only industry
related. There also stories about the Loch Nesss monster, human
     combustion and other oddities.

     - Paul
