Jaguar V12L overheating (fwd)

Can anyone offer this guy some help? I have pointed him
to the overheating-guide on the web-site.

Subject: Jaguar V12L overheating

Nick,
I am sure you get many request for assistance on overheating problems.
Unfortunately in Australia there is not too much info available on 1974
V12L(double six Jags).
My problem is this:
This recently purchased car(done only 88,000 miles) has shown signs of
overheating from the beginning. Taking the car to a "specialist", it was
checked for CO2 in the coolant, but none was found. There were no
thermostats fitted. Two 85 degree types were put in place. Driving the
car at 90 km/hr the temperature indicator climbed up into the hot region.
It was then back to the specialist who fitted 80 degree thermostats. This
did not eliminate the problem and the car shows overheating @ 110km/hr.
Subsequently. I have flushed and bled the coolant system, tightening
all hoses and checking caps for sealing. I ran the car at 1500 rpm for 3
minutes to warm up, followed by running at 2700 rpm for 3 minutes with
temperature gauge moving into hot region. The fans cut in as the
indicator moved up. The pressure cap(LHS) was checked and found to be
leaking coolant. The cap is a 15psi/100 type.
It appears with my basic knowledge of the cooling system that only a
small amount of coolant needs to be lost before the temperature sensor is
no longer in contact with coolant and the indicator gauge shows
overheating.
Two pressure caps(15psi/100) have been tried on the LHS but both have
leaked. My question is: Would it be possible to blow a head gasket if I
fitted a 16psi/100 degree cap?

I would appreciate any information you could provide on this problem. The
car has been a big investment and I would like to use it to take my
family(wife and 3 children) on comfortable long distance drives. It is
the best car we have ever owned.

			Kind regards,
