My bible for rebuilding is "Automotive Engine Rebuilding" by Hughes. The advice on freeze plugs is that there are three types, the disc type which is installed with the dished side in; the cup type which is fitted to most cars comes in two versions. If the widest part of the plug is the outer rim it goes in convex side in, driven 1/32" past the bottom of the hole chamfer. If the widest part of the plug is at the curve from wall to base then it goes in convex side out. My own experience is that this latter type is not common, and I placed the freeze plugs convex side in the engines I have done. The result is the the widest part of the plug is closest to the outer surface of the block. Regards Peter Smith
