[xj-s] Gas tank filler cap

List

I would me interested in your responses. I have a 1978 XJ-S (60K miles). I
seem to have some venting of gas vapors from the gas cap. Jaguar did a
recall some years ago due to excessive pressure in the tank. This has cured
the problem somewhat, however the real problem is the sealing of the gas
cap. The cap is a simple twist on thingajig. The sealing surface is not as
smooth as it should be and is further compromised by the two cutouts
necessary to latch the cap. I have looked at the caps on my other cars,
(mostly GM's). From 1988 to 1994 my cars all have a screw on gas cap with a
large rubber "O" ring looking gasket that seals the cap to the filler neck.
This is clearly a superior design. Is this design used on the later (1988
to current) Jaguars? Does any one else have the problem that I am having?
Will the later design fit the earlier cars?
I plan to visit the local Junkyard and cut off the top of a late model Chev
filler neck and weld that bad boy onto the cut off neck of the Jaguar
filler neck.
If interested will keep the list posted.

Regards

Bernie
