On the bottom of the heads where they come in contact with the gasket, there are several openings for coolant to flow from the block through holes in the gasket and into the head. One row is round openings, the other row is oblong holes. On my heads, several of these holes were rimmed with casting flashing; apparently the core meets the form right at the hole, and there was little effort to clean away the flashing at the factory. Most of the flashing didn't appear very obstructive, but two of the oblong holes were pretty significantly closed up. No, the affected holes do not correlate with my dropped valve seat. Anyhow, I'll be adding a suggestion to the book that anyone with the head off take a Dremel and clear away this flashing to ensure the holes are fully open. Might not be a big deal, but couldn't hurt. -- Kirbert | If anything is to be accomplished, | some rules must be broken. | - Palm's Postulate
