Sounds like you got a bad compressor that was seizing. Now you'll need a
new clutch as well. This sort of thing happens from time to time. On our
'86, the compressor runs all the time, as far as I know. These are
common Harrison a/c compressors. Millions of 'em out there. Maybe the
supplier Pep Boys uses does not have good quality control, or it was
just the (bad) luck of the draw. 
If the internals of the compressor self-destructed, you must check
carefully for debris in the discharge line that goes to the condenser.
Any solids could not only clog the condenser and rec/drier, but could
travel up the solid tube and lodge in the expansion valve metering
device. If contamination is suspected, the condenser should be
thoroughly flushed and a new rec/drier installed. You should have a
total 10 oz of oil in the system, unless the tag on your original (Jag)
unit said different.
It was smart to have the extinguisher at hand.
