okay, the final word on the new (XJ6) fan is that the blades are about 1/4'' (or less) too long to fit inside the shroud. So the holes in the center section were NOT the only difference... I was tired of this whole episode, so rather than wait for a clutch that would fit the new style fan, I carefully trimmed the blades on the new XJ6 fan. Used an abrasive cutoff disc, chucked in drill that was clamped in a vise. Made a rough cut first, leaving about a sixteenth, then used the side of the cutoff disc to fine-trim it. Seems to work fine. The old fan blades do not look like they were trimmed. The material of the new fan is a tough nylon-like plastic, less brittle than the old one, but this is probably due to age. It definitely would have been easier to bite the bullet and buy a clutch that fit the new style fan. I just didn't want to spend any more money and wait for parts again. And I really didn't want to push my luck with the old fan any more. One thing that was kind of funny was how easy the job seemed this time, after having just done it last week... jb
