><snip> >a) what happens when the fan is not powered but spinning fast and THEN it is >switched on by the thermostat control? >b) If the fan can't freewheel easily because it is acting like a generator >(windings are creating resistance to rotation) then wouldn't it act as an >impediment to freeflow of the air thru the radiator? Yes it will act as a generator if fitted with permanant magnets. When the motor is switched off by your thermo switch, there will be no circuit back to the car's electrical system, hence no possibility of current/spikes into your electrical system. As there is no electrical load on the motor, there will be no mechanical load to slow the fan from spinning. Try this with the motor connections shorted and you will have a braking effect, I think this is how they stop electric trains??!? I reckon any spikes/voltage produced by this motor when the fan is switched on and off will be easily and harmlessly absorbed into the cars electrical system. In comparison to spikes produced by the starter, ign coils and air-con clutch these are neglidgable. Richard XJS-HE '83 (Steam powered)
