[xj-s] RE: Chris Kyriakides's $1000 radiator & "big yellow" or not to "big yellow"

Chris, save your self lots of $$$ like many of have done lately. Pull the
radiator yourself. Get it rodded & boilled, $70 - $120. You could even have
them add a drain valve so you do not get the coolant all over except in the
bucket you are trying to catch it in when you disconnect the lower hose to
drain. (don't re use the coolant though) Also while in there, might as well
replace (if it is there) the brittle sealing foam rubber on the sides, top &
bottom with some new stuff. I just did this with some foam I got at a local
hardware store. It is weatherstriping for around a window mounted A/C. 42"
long by 2 1/2" square. Paid about $2 USD for it. Easy to cut with a sharp
blade.

As far as replacing "big yellow" with some electrics, see the others comments.
Myself I went back from dual electrics to the stock (almost) configuration.
Most lileky a combo of the fans I was using & the way I was using them (& lack
of sealing foam so all air into the engine goes through the radiator, air like
water & electricty like to take the path of least resistance, so plug up them
holes) did not result in satisfactory conditions to me. Yes it did make a
little more room in the engine bay w/o "big yellow", but ran too hot for me.
Went to dual electrics to get rid of the propeller & save a few HP. (also
thinking the off the shelf units I used would move as much air). Now in the
90+F weather we are having here in Colorado USA, runs right where it should
even with the A/C on. If I had used better stronger fans & better custom
shroud, may have worked better for me.

Guess you will have to find something else to amuse your girlfriend once you
get your cooling worked out. Enjoy her with the top down. (the convertable
that is) ;-)
