[xj-s] ? on radiator fan clutch, possible replacement for AUX fan & temp gauge observat

Recently someone posted (can't find the original one right now) on how to tell
if your centrifugal fan clutch is working ok. Just want to make sure I
understand. When the engine is cold, you should be able to freely turn the
fan blade but will not be able to "spin it", that is when you stop turning it,
it stops & you can not make it spin w/o help. When the engine is hot that you
should not be able to turn it with much ease (like when cold). If it spins
freely after you let go or it does not spin at all, then it is definitely bad.
Are these statements correct?

As my Bosch aux fan gave up a while ago, I was looking for a cheaper
alternative. I was not happy with my 2 electric fan setup (1-16" & 1-14" with
& w/o a custom shroud) so I am going back to the stock setup (and do need a
new stock yellow fan as it is starting to crack, surprise surprise). I have a
12" electric fan (Imperial Brand, but I think any GOOD 12" should work). This
fan just fits inside the hole for the stock aux fan. I had to trip off some
square mounts off the side, drilled a few holes in the sides of the fan
housing & stock shroud to mount securely. Don't know how the airflow
compares between the two, but it does leave a little more room where the stock
fan mounts once were. Guess I will see how this works out for me.

I also have been using a 2nd temp gauge to see what is actually going on. The
sender is on the bottom radiator hose. It seems that when the temp is between
200 - 235F, this equates to the bottom of N on the stock gauge. Once the temp
gets to about 240F, it then jumps to ½ or a little higher between N & H.
Think I will leave in the aux gauge for a while, as I do not like this. (Then
again, how accurate can you be with C N H as your only indicators, still would
be preferable for the needle to move with the temp, not just sit there for
large temp ranges)
