[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index] Re: [xj-s] Removing the Alternator HELP!!
There is a tensioning bolt that connects to the _bottom_ of the alternator. It should be barely visible from above, but the only way to "easily" access it is to crawl under the car. Even then, you might have to turn it by feel, since there isn't a whole lot of room under there. You will save a lot of time if you look for the bolt that holds the block that the tensioning bolt goes through and which holds it to the engine. Removing that bolt will release the tension and remove the tensioning assembly from its connection to the engine at the same time. This will allow you to remove the alternator with the tensioning assembly still on it. That makes it easier to attach it to the new alternator and to set up the tension close to the original so that you don't have to run a nut so far on the tensioning bolt. I hope all this makes sense. If it doesn't after you have looked at the car, email me back and I will try to be more clear. Also, see my post entitled "Alternator Charging, a Quick Fix" for an important procedure to use when installing the new alternator.
