Some discussions with Roger Bywater have clarified an error we made here: The .002"-.006" interference fit called out in the specs is for the GUIDE, not the seat. The spec listing in front of the Repair Operation Manual doesn't list the fit for these seats, but it IS called out in section 12.29.18, step 14: it should be .003" tight. Bywater says the industry standard for tightness of valve seats was developed by Phil Irving, engine chief at Vincent Motor Cycles: 0.0015 -0.002" interference per inch of diameter. Hence, the .003" is right in line, apparently. So, let's start the discussion over! Is the .003" good enough, or are we gonna come up with our own spec? BTW, Bywater also clarifies that the seat should NOT, under any circumstances, be "pressed" in. That would shave some aluminum off the head, not only making it loose but preventing the seat from sitting all the way to the bottom of the hole.
