ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON, Aug. 21 - Jaguar North America is recalling more than 3,500 cars that may not meet federal clean air emission standards. The recall affects 1994-1995 models of the XJ12 and XJS with a 6.0 liter V12 engine. JAGUAR SPOKESMAN Simon Sproul said the Environmental Protection Agency requested the recall after its testing found the cars' emissions were higher than allowed under U.S. standards. About 550 of the 1995 Jaguar XJ12s are being recalled for an air pump check valve failure that may cause excess hydrocarbon emissions. Hydrocarbons are a major contributor to smog, which causes problems for asthmatics and aggravates other respiratory conditions. About 3,000 1994 and 1995 Jaguar XJS and XJ12 models are being recalled for a failure in the oxygen sensor circuit, which ensures the correct amount of fuel and air are burned when the engine is running. Failure of this device can cause excess emissions of harmful air pollutants, including nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxides and hydrocarbons. Jaguar began sending letters to the affected owners earlier this month. Jaguar dealers will fix the cars for free. Submissions for approval to this list to: jag-news@jag-lovers.org.
