[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index] Re: Accidental automatics
From a mag. article per Richard Mansell 2-25. Richard relayed this in response to postings ref. accidental shifting an auto trans into rev. >> Jaguar's selector blamed for another accident<< >> What is not widely appreciated is that if an automatic transmission selector is moved to reverse position, reverse on most cars will usually engage, whatever the speed, instantly locking the rear wheels and sending the car out of control.<< Is this true?, used to have transmissions in the 60's that had interlocks internally to prevent reverse engagements above a certain speed. I find it hard to believe this feature would have been eliminated, especially in the US market where even a coffee spill can cost a company millions. Does anyone know if our cars still have these interlocks, what about the newer vehicles? Not finding anything but the mildest caution in my ops manual, I tried a low forward speed D to R shift with closed thottle on my 86 XJ6. No problem, rev. engaged with a clunk, car continued forward overunning the converter until it stopped and started to back up. Converters are not very effective in overun but I suppose at higher speed sufficient resistance could be generated to be an effective brake. Dont think I will test it to find out , although if I suffer a catastophic brake failure one day.......... Hmmmm Richard Griffiths 86 XJ6 86XJS
