[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index] Another Use For Synthetic Oil
I recently changed the oil on our minivan. This car gets Mobil 1. The oil filter is located in an awkward spot (the designers had a good laugh on this one), so oil from the old filter inevitably drips onto the back of a front wheel. This car has factory aluminum wheels. Of course, the backs of these wheels never get cleaned, and they get pretty disgusting (salt and brake dust and etc.). So some of the old Mobil 1 drips on the back of the wheel as I removed the old filter. It sits there a while until I was finished installing the new filter. I wipe the drip away with a rag and -- VOILA -- a perfectly clean wheel. Looked like it just rolled out of the factory (at least, where the drip was!). And this is used oil -- do the detergents wear out? I dipped a rag in the old synthetic oil, and wiped down some of the aluminum parts on the Jag engine. Cleaned them pretty good. Note that this is not a polishing process, but cleaning. Anyway, this stuff sure has some effective detergents in it. In the spirit of scientific analysis, I tried the same thing with regular engine oil. Also worked, but not quite as well. I dumped my spare V12 distributor into the bucket of old Mobil 1 -- this is the unit from my donor engine with the seized centrifugal advance -- to see if it will free it up. I'll report back after it has sit in there a while. John
