Information needed on XJ6 valve seals

Hello,

My name is Steve and I am a new owner of a 1983 Jaguar XJ6. When I
test drove the car I didn't detect the problem but now I have.

When I start the car in the morning or if it has been sitting for a
while there seems to be a fair amount of oil burning. Once the car
warms up though the problem goes away.

So I took the car to the a couple of mechanics and here is the
information I received.

One mechanic told me that it is either the valve seals or the rings.
If it is the valve seals then he can replace them without pulling the
heads. If it is the rings then I am looking a big dollars to have him
1. Pull the heads
2. Replace the rings
That is if the Pistons are ok. If they are not then replace the
pistons and have the piston walls bored out. All of this is to be done
with the engine in place.

The second mechanic I talked to said pretty much the same thing
except.
1. Replacing the valve seals without pulling the head is a mickey
mouse way to do things. He said that if the seals need doing then pull
the heads, have the heads and valves ground etc....
2. If the rings are shot. Replace the engine with another used engine
with low milage. The replacement engine will even come with a warrenty
and will cost about the same as if I went with the 1st mechanics
option.

The second mechanic strongly believes that the problem is valve seals.
The car is very clean and has been well maintained. He said that it
would be a complete and total surprise if it was the rings and
pistons.

I mentioned to him that I would pull the heads then to keep costs
down. He said good luck. He said it can be done but it unless you have
a garage to work in where you can pull the the heads off you are
wasting your time. He said that it is very common for the heads to be
warped and getting the head off of the bolts is very tough.

Here is my question.
Is there a problem with changing the valve seals without pulling the
head? If it is done this way will I simply be returning on a later day
to have the head pulled and ground?

Is is nearly impossible for one to pull the head without special tools
or facilities?

Thanks in advance
