I know nothing of the XJ6 SII, but I certainly know that this would NOT be the case on any power steering system I'm aware of! If changing the pulley makes a difference, then changing the engine speed would make a difference, and driving the car would be nuts -- boost changing every time the engine RPM went up or down. The pressure output of the GM power steering pump on the XJ-S is not a function of RPM, but rather of a spring in a pressure regulator within the unit. Perhaps replacing this spring with a lighter one would result in lower system pressure and hence less power steering boost. On the XJ-S, a common problem is that the power steering won't "keep up" with the steering. Working the steering hard, sometimes you run out of boost and suddenly have manual steering -- very disconcerting in the heat of the moment. I suspect this is usually due to dropping the throttle to idle, and idle is too slow. Whatever, could possibly be fixed by fitting a SMALLER pulley to the power steering pump, so it turns FASTER at idle, but then what happens to the pump at 6500 RPM? -- Kirbert | If anything is to be accomplished, | some rules must be broken. | - Palm's Postulate References:
