re: 1985 XJ6 aerial question

Jim,

If you want to check the antenna (to see if it really can go up and
down by itself), you can do that from inside the boot. Let's say
this is a factory unit. The factory antenna depends on an external
relay (mounted right by the aerial motor) to switch the polarity to
the motor to make it go up or to go down. There will be a wire from the relay
that goes to the radio - Haynes (!) says this is White/Pink - when energized
with +12V, the antenna will go up. When the wire is disconnected, a
few seconds will elapse and then the antenna drops.

To test: Disconnect this wire from the antenna relay. Turn on the ignition.
Connect that terminal of the relay to +12V - see if the antenna goes up.
Disconnect that wire - the aerial should go down after a delay.

If this is an aftermarket antenna, it may have the relay internally, but I
don't know.
The PO may have bodged the wiring, too.

My XJ6 Parts Interchange Guide lists some antennas that people have found
to fit -
the guide is at
	www.ns.net/~dshield

Holler if you need more specifics like confirmation of the wire color.
Good luck!
