You should be able to come fairly close. First, make sure the cable is not binding. It should pull out and snap back in with little effort. You should feel a step at the end of the travel. This is where it pulls the kickdown cam in. Next set the cable so the crimped on ferrel is about one mm from the end of the threaded housing. This should have you pretty close. Test drive and adjust it in or out as needed. If you move it very far from this initial setting, then there is likely to be something else wrong. While adjusting things, keep in mind that a firmer shift, though more noticable and less comfortable, is good for the transmission. The less slippage changing gears, the longer clutches live.
