Peter, If the noise is only on hard acceleration, it may be a cracked exhaust manifold, also check the manifold to head bolts. Temporarily disconnect the fan belt and road test, a failed engine mount can cause the engine to "torque over" under load causing the fan to catch on the shroud. I had this problem on a '88 XJ-S, only showed up on fast R/H corners or hump back bridges, taken me a while to trace sounded like it was coming from the tranny /propshaft.
