Subject: Engine bay heat - surging idle/ breakdown

OK guys, really need some help, not for my 420G, which never suffers
from overheating, but for my XJ6 series 2 that has been converted
to fuel injection and has (sorry purists) a corvette TPI 350 in it.

It looks like it's the same kind of problem the V12's have , and is
maybe a generic EFI problem that hopefully you experts out there can
help with.

The engine bay gets really hot, and yesterday, a very hot day, I was
stuck in heavy traffic for 1 hour crawling to work. The throttle
response started to deteriorate, and then while I was standing at
the lights, the idle started to surge up and down. The car then
started to backfire and wouldn't accellerate, and within 30 seconds
just stalled and wouldn't run. Do these engines get as hot as the V12's ?
Should I get a V12 fuel cooler and install it ?
I had driven the whole time on the right fuel tank, and thinking that
the fuel had reached boiling point in that tank, thus causing the
surging, quickly switched to the left tank, which should have had
much cooler fuel. This didn't help, and I still broke down.

Is it possible that the computer got screwed up trying to figure out
how to handle the boiling fuel from the right tank, and so couldn't
go back to normal mode once I switched over ? Is there something
else apart from hot fuel that can cause this kind of problem ? My
mechanic says that vapour lock shouldn't happen with EFI, but it seemed
to me that it may have contributed to the problem. After 30 minutes
of sitting there cooling down, the car started right away, and drove
like nothing had ever happened.

I'm really desperate here guys.....please help me out if you can.

thanks..
