Re: To buy or not to buy - Mk2

Ludwig,

Reliability is not a problem - if the car is maintained. The biggest problems
relate to serious rust: structural in the rear spring hangers, cosmetic in the
front wings (etc. etc. - you need to read up on this before you buy). All the
panels are available at reasonable cost (ok, wings are expensive), but there
can be a lot of work involved.

The engines are very reliable if maintained - i.e. regular oil changes and
(v. important) correct antifreeze/corrosion inhibitors in the cooling system.
Early cars have Moss gearboxes which are ok but have a few well documented
problems, later cars have an all synchro box: mine is fine, as is the diff.

Brakes can be a problem: they work very well when in good condition but the
cylinders tend to rust and leak. Various upgrades are now available.

Electrics can have the "usual" old car gremlins - mostly due to corroded
connectors and grounds, and worn contacts, and rubber bushes etc deteriorate:
but these are not specific Mk2 (or Jaguar!) problems.

I would say that if the shell is in good shape, and the engine has been kept
serviced, and you *use the car regularly*, you needn't worry about reliability.

My car never left me stranded and the only things that caused problems
were: regulator (contacts), brakes (leaks) and rust (sagging suspension). Of
course, I also had a slipping clutch which has led to the car being off the
road for 6.5 years...but most of the work to put it back has been caused by
neglect for the first 4 of those 6.5 years. It's nearly back now, and I can't
wait!

YMMV,
Cheers,
Ted
