The fact that the engine would not run in base-idle mode tells me one of two things: A> Someone has previously mucked with the settings in a vain attempt to fix something. (this does happen a lot) b> Something else is wrong, and you just "covered" for it by adjusting the base up higher. The two most likely things to be wrong is either a gummed up throttle body, or a vacuum leak. And, once this problem is cured, you have to go back to A>. At race tracks, I often hear people say that they had to reset their alignment because an off road excursion "knocked it out". My standard answer to them is that the rock/curb/pothole/whatever did not reach up, loosen the locks, and turn the adjusters. Whatever you hit bent something. Find it and fix it. Or risk a possibly catostrophic failure later on. the same thing applies to modern engines (AJ-6). The continous wear items are long gone. No points to wear. Dwell doesn't change. Timing doesn't change. no finnicky carburettors. Idle speed and mixtures should never need adjusting. If you find that something needs adjusting, first find the root cause. an AJ6 engine will idle pretty damn good with a large vacuum leak. Randy K. Wilson randy@taylor.infi.net References:
