Re: ongoing XK8 discussion

> Sometimes I think that the same people that are putting down the XK8 now will
be driving them in ten or twelve years, when they can afford them. It's a kind
of reverse snobbery (I recall the post describing the woman driving one as a
kind of surgically-enhanced middle-aged bimbo...but she WAS driving it, and
maybe she even bought it with her own money, even if she might not know how to
port and polish the heads).

Well said, John. The shaddy personal value systems unearthed by this
thread make me less than proud to be part of what I thought once to be
an august gathering. Come on, lads un lasses! Don't mire yourselves
     in this covetous nonsense.

> In spite of my comment the other day about the James Bond anti-snob sludge
sprayer, I think if someone can afford an eighty thousand dollar car, more power
to them. Maybe she didn't even recognize the car flashing it's lights as a
Jaguar, or maybe she just thought it was weird that someone in a ten or fifteen
year old car of the same marque as hers was flashing it's lights at her. Not
everybody feels that Jaguars are imbued with mystical forces, and a lot of
people that drive them couldn't care less that Jaguar built the D-type, or the
E-type, or any other type. They just want a luxurious car that makes them feel
special, successful, whatever.

Exactly. Jaguars are great... FOR US!! But we should have no need to
force our views and feelings on others who do not naturally share
     them.

> I can remember guys who were into E-types being horrified at the XJ-S when it
appeared, and frankly, even though I will probably buy one this year, I have to
agree that it's a bizarre looking car from many angles. It's just that today an
older XJ-S is the most affordable V-12 car around. But if I could spend
unlimited amounts on a car, I don't think I would choose to buy an old XJ-S and
then imagine I was cooler than someone with something brand new, very expensive,
rarely seen, etc. That's just jealousy and self-deception.

Yep, -- although I'm not sure I fully agree with your characterization
of the quintessentially beautiful XJ-S, but at least you phrase it in
     the nicest possible taste.
