XJ6 Timing Chain Cover Corrosion

Just got a phone call from a guy with an XJ6C trying to get a copy of my
book. In the course of discussion, he mentioned a problem with his engine
that I haven't heard mention of on this group. Of course, I wasn't able to
help him, know nothing of the XJ6.

His problem was this: the car had sat unused for some time. While sitting,
apparently the coolant (water?) within the water pump had corroded through
the timing chain cover, and was leaking into the crankcase. Finding water in
the oil, he took the standard action and replaced the head gasket -- no help.
 Took further looking before he found the real problem.

So, he started visiting junkyards in search of a replacement timing chain
cover. Lo and behold, every one he looked at displayed evidence of similar
corrosion and pitting behind the water pump. However, every Jag expert he
talks to says he hasn't heard of a problem.

So, let's talk it up! Is there a problem there? Yet another penalty for not
using the proper antifreeze mix?

He also says you've gotta pull the head to replace this cover. All of this
has him contemplating the lump.
